СЕМ® ThermoDiagnostics personal thermograph is designed for measuring infra-red (IR) temperature of any surfaces. It is made in two modifications: without the software (with LCD screen) and equipped with software (with this version a user can get a color thermogram of an examined surface). Both modifications distantly receive IR emissions from remotely located objects, including skin surfaces. The device itself does not emit any irradiation during temperature measurements. Consequently, both modifications of the device can be used for measuring temperature without any restriction. The version of thermograph with software is linked with a computer through a radio channel. The channel frequency and irradiation power (not exceeding 10 mW/cm2) are allowed for use without any restrictions.

Question: What is the operating principle of CEM® ThermoDiagnostics personal thermograph?

Answer: СЕМ® ThermoDiagnostics personal thermograph is an infra-red (IR) thermometer that measures the intensity of the infra-red irradiation energy. This radiation is being detected and converted into corresponding accurate temperature values.

up

Question: In what modifications CEM® ThermoDiagnostics thermometer is available?

Answer: СЕМ® ThermoDiagnostics personal thermograph has two modifications. First version has LCD and temperature values are displayed on the display screen. The second version has radio-controlled module, which can be linked to any personal computer through USB drive (thermal data is processed into thermograms by CEM® ThermoImage software).

up

Question: Does CEM® ThermoDiagnostics thermometer have any harmful effects?

Answer: No, CEM® ThermoDiagnostics thermometer is not a source of any radiation, the unit is only a receiver of thermal energy. Its radio-module emits radio waves of a very low intensiveness. However, due to a very small size of the thermometer and its accessories (nozzle, screwdriver, and USB dongle) it should be kept out of reach of children or pets.

up

Question: Do I need to be a doctor to use CEM® ThermoDiagnostics thermometer?

Answer: No, the book «СЕМ® ThermoDiagnostics personal thermograph and its capabilities» describes all usage capabilities of the thermometer by a user without special skills or medical background. However, only a physician or doctor can evaluate results of measured temperature for latent diseases as well as for assessment of an effectiveness of any treatment.

up

Question: Why cannot I use the thermometer for measuring overall body temperature, in the axillary space, in ears, etc.?

Answer: The thermometer measures temperature in infra-red range, the energy of which constitutes 85% of the whole thermal energy emitted by a human body. Consequently, measurement results may vary by 15% from values provided by electronic, mercury, ear, and forehead thermometers (difference is about 1 to 1,5 degrees Celsius).

up

Question: Why does the thermometer display temperature values of 30,1 or 33 degrees Celsius? That cannot be true; my body temperature is 36,6 degrees Celsius!

Answer: Normal temperature of human body, measured by a mercury thermometer in armpits is about 36.6°C ±0.7°C. The temperature of the rest of the skin surface depends on many factors including blood circulation, metabolic processes, ambient temperature and so forth. Consequently, it may differ from the temperature measured in armpits by 7-10°C and even more.

up

Question: Why does the temperature differ in various parts of the body (hands, legs, head, etc)?

Answer: The body temperature is a complex factor of a thermal state of the human organism; it reflects complicated relations between heat generation of various organs and tissues on one side and the heat exchange between them and external environment on the other side. Various parts of skin have different temperatures. In the normal state, the temperature decreases from a head to extremities and to the finger tips as well. The distribution of temperature over the body is symmetrical; the difference between the symmetrical zones does not exceed 0,2°–0,4°С.

up

Question: Are there any difference between beginners and advanced users, aged and young, corpulent and slim users?

Answer: The difference between beginners and experienced users is in temperature measuring skills only. Before starting examination, it is necessary to practice on various parts of the body. It is essential to achieve such quality of measurements that the repetitive measurements’ results in the same point do not differ for more than 0,2С°. There is no difference in temperature measuring techniques between aged and young users. However, it should be kept in mind that with aging the superficial temperature decreases. Between corpulent and slim users there is also no difference in temperature measuring techniques as described in the user’s guidebook. Though, it should be remembered that subcutis or fat contributes to decrease of skin temperature.

up

Question: What is the accuracy of the thermometer?

Answer: It is necessary to distinguish technical accuracy of the thermometer itself and clinical accuracy of temperature measurements. The technical accuracy is determined under laboratory conditions with a purpose of providing guarantee of instrument’s quality, by taking in consideration relevant technical standards. The resolution equal to “±0,2ºС” is considered to be admissible for high quality instruments. The user MUST NOT confuse technical accuracy with application accuracy. The temperature values of a human body described herein depend on measurement time and location. The values are intrinsic to physiologic reasons, not to dysfunction of the thermometer. In case of correct application of the instrument, accuracy readings of the thermometer can be very high (please, follow the instructions on how to measure the temperature).

up

Question: What is the purpose of measuring surface body temperature?

Answer: Please, become familiar with informational materials included in the set “СЕМ® ThermoDiagnostics” personal thermograph. Using these materials, you may preserve and sustain your health correctly depending on your needs in cosmetology, physiotherapeutic treatment, massages, and consciously take biologically active food supplements. You can identify latent diseases; evaluate efficiency of any kind of treatment, including the ones based on pharmaceutical medications, physiotherapeutic treatment, and so forth, together with consultation from a physician.

up

Question: What is essential for measuring surface temperature?

Answer: Following the measuring technique is mandatory! Readings of body’s infra-red temperature depend on the measurement point (availability or absence of subcutis, route of major vessels, presence of hidden pathological processes, etc.), physical activity, taking medicines, receiving physiotherapeutic treatment, smoking, using cell phone, and any other factors influencing blood circulation and metabolism.

up

Question: What should I do if the temperature values measured at the same point are always different?

Answer: Following measuring technique is mandatory! Correct temperature values can be received only after thermal acclimatization. For thermal acclimatization, expose uncovered (without clothes) part of the body that needs to be measured to the room temperature for 10-15 minutes. The body should be placed in a comfortable position (sitting, horizontal or prone positions) away from heating appliances and air drafts. Please, check, if the applied thermometer is positioned correctly to the measured area. Thermometer’s nozzle must be placed strictly perpendicular to the skin surface. Before taking measurements, measured area must not be touched by hands.

up

Question: Are there any certain parts of the body where I cannot measure temperature?

Answer: Please, do not measure temperature inside cavities (oral, rectal, etc.) and do not apply the thermometer to open wounds. While measuring hairy parts of the body, please, move the hair apart.

up

Question: If I want to evaluate the effectiveness of massage, when and on which parts of the body do I need to measure the temperature?

Answer: Temperature should be measured before the massage, after the first course of the massage, after the last course of the massage, and prior to every massage course. Thus, you may evaluate effectiveness of just one massage as well as the effectiveness of treatment course. The measurements should be done on the body parts subjected to massage and on the intrinsically connected areas (for instance, while massaging the cervical zone, the temperature of the upper limbs should go up).

up

Question: Can I find out if I have a thermal characteristic of cerebrovascular circulation disturbance after smoking a cigarette?

Answer: Smoking causes spasm of veins. By measuring temperature after 30 minutes after smoking a cigarette, you can evaluate the nicotine influence. As stated in informational materials, all measurements should be carried out 2 hours after smoking a cigarette. Only in this case you can accurately evaluate the results of temperature measurements.

up

Question: For how long do the temperature misbalances persist after disappearance of clinical signs of maxillitis?

Answer: Thermal characteristics with minimal temperature dispersions may persist for about 1,5- 2 weeks.

up

Question: Should all birthmarks be measured?

Answer: There is no need to measure all of them. If you are suffering from an unpleasant sensation, such as pruritus, tingling, or if the birthmark’s appearance is changing, than you should compare the temperature of a nevus and surrounding tissues. In any case, please, consult your physician. If the temperature difference between the nevus and surrounding skin exceeds 0,6°С, it is a thermal characteristic of the nevus state’s change.

up

Question: My right knee joint is deformed and does not perfectly bend, how should I measure the temperature correctly?

Answer: First of all, please sit down on a chair. The normally functioning limb should be put in the same position as the injured one. Please, measure temperature in symmetrical points. Such technique ensures the best results of temperature measurements.

up

Question: Can I measure milk’s temperature or water temperature for bathing my baby?

Answer: Yes, by using CEM® ThermoDiagnostics thermometer the temperature of liquids can be measured (please, check the guide book for domestic applications of the thermometer). While measuring, the thermometer must be kept at the distance of about 1 cm above the liquid surface. Do not let the fluid enter the thermometer!
